Imax Corporation has struck a deal with Major Cineplex to create up to 10 new Imax With Laser systems in Thailand and Cambodia.

The deal, announced at CinemaCon on Monday, will bring five new (two film and three conditional) systems in Thailand and carry out four upgrades to key locations in the country by 2025 (including locations in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Chiang Mai), and one upgrade in Cambodia.

Imax has seen strong box office results in Thailand and Cambodia and said 2022 was its highest-grossing year in both markets. Avatar: The Way Of Water is the highest-grossing Imax release ever in both countries.

Major Cineplex is the largest exhibitor in Thailand and currently operates seven Imax locations. The companies have partnered since 1998 and announced a deal for three new Imax with Laser systems at CinemaCon 2022.

“The Thai audience continues to show a strong appetite for the IMAX Experience, and we’re excited to invest in new key locations, including popular global tourist destinations in Thailand,” said Imax CEO Rich Gelfond.

Major Cineplex CEO Vicha Poolvaraluck said the deal would cover “Bangkok’s most iconic shopping mall and other tourist destinations in Thailand, as well as to the Aeon Mall 2 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia”.
