Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 dominated the North American box office over the weekend with a spectacular estimated $73.5m that delivered the rarest of things – a franchise record from a fourth instalment.
In fact Chapter 4 kept a remarkable feat going – every successive instalment in the nine-year Keanu Reeves assassin series has opened stronger than its predecessor.
Buoyed by strong reviews the film directed by Chad Stahelski is expected to become the highest grossing entry in the franchise and looks a strong bet to overtake the $171m final gross set by 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
Lionsgate motion picture group president Joe Drake was bullish talking about the results over the weekend and did not rule out a sequel, although spin-off Ballerina starring Ana de Armas and Reeves is in the works.
The debut continued a strong run for March, which has been a critical month with successive tentpole releases. Except for Warner Bros Shazam Fury Of The Gods – last weekend’s champion fell two slots to number three and stands at $46.3m after two weekends – every one has delivered with MGM’s Creed III in second place on $140.9m after four sessions and Paramount’s Scream VI in fourth place on $89.9m after three.
Florence Pugh drama A Good Person opened in 12th place on $834,000 in 530 theatres via UAR and Stephen Frears’ The Lost King starring Sally Hawkins and Steve Coogan opened at number 13 on $575,000 from 753 through IFC Films.
Next weekend sees the arrival of Paramount’s SXSW opener Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
