The National Board of US actors and performers’ union SAG-AFTRA recommended that its members vote for a strike to prepare for the start of contract negotiations on June 7, but a vote to authorize a striking would not necessarily result in a work stoppage from the 160,000 SAG-AFTRA members. However, it would allow the board of the union to call a walkout if it “deemed necessary” during the negotiation process.

Unions will have until the 5th of June to vote on strike authorisation. SAG-AFTRA is not on strike since 2000, when it took action against commercial producers. The negotiations will take place this year against the backdrop the US writers’ strike, which is now in its third weeks and has the support of some well-known actors. Commenting the board’s recommendation, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher stated: “For the very first time in many years, our member leadership is united at the National Board and the Negotiating Committee levels in moving forward with an authorisation to strike. We must have all our ducks lined up in case the need arises. Strikes are not the first option. They are a last resort. As my father always says, “Better to not need and have than to need and have!” Therefore, I implore all eligible members to show unprecedented solidarity by voting ‘yes’ to a strike authorization vote. A ‘yes” vote gives the National Board power to call a walkout if the AMPTP fails to negotiate fairly during our upcoming bargaining. This will be an important negotiation that will determine what it means to work as a performer in the future. We must be prepared to fight for a meaningful agreement for our members.”
