New Line, Warner Bros and Sweden’s Embracer Group are partnering on a new slate of films based on The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit.

The multi-year deal with Embracer Group AB, through Middle-Earth Enterprises, a division of Embracer Group’s operative group Freemode, will create an unspecified number of Middle Earth films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world.

It comes 20 years after New Line released Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, which was followed by The Hobbit trilogy in co-production with MGM.

Those six films combined for close to $6bn in ticket sales worldwide. That success chimes with the ethos of Warner Bros Discovery head David Zaslav, who announced the pact in the company’s fourth quarter 2022 earnings call on Thursday (February 23) in which he reaffirmed his commitment to theatrical.

New Line and Warner Bros. Animation is currently in production on The Lord Of The Rings The War Of The Rohirrim10, which was set 183 years prior to the events in The Lord Of The Rings. The film is scheduled to open theatrically on April 12, 2024.
